On the 15th September Fr. Paul hosted a “Thank You” buffet in the grounds of St. Colman’s church to celebrate the contribution of all those who volunteer for the many parish ministries and groups that operate within Derriaghy parish. There are so many people who give generously of their time to these ministries which benefit the whole parish community and build the Kingdom of Christ; and thankfully, many of them were able to join us on the day.
Many groups were represented, including: the Ministers of the Word and Eucharistic Ministers, the Altar Society, the Altar Servers, the Legion of Mary, the Folk Group, the Apostolic Group, the 23rd Antrim Scouts, the Parish Pastoral Council, the Finance Committee, Bethany Bereavement, the Adoration Committee, Children’s Liturgy, the Tuesday Prayer Group, the Craft Group and Do This in Memory.
The Principal of St. Colman’s Primary School, Mr. Baine, very kindly allowed us the use of the tables from the school canteen, which were placed in the church car park to avail of the dry weather.
Catering for the event was provided by Root Soup, a social enterprise company that works with people with learning disabilities and the homeless; training them in how to grow and prepare food. The team on the day was led by Alison, who was assisted by Cathy and Isobel. They ensured that the food was delicious and plentiful, with hotdogs, burgers, coleslaw, potato salad and mixed salad; followed by pavlova and profiteroles, tea and coffee.
Thankfully the weather was kind to us, with the rain holding off ensuring that everyone was able to sit outside chatting and catching up with each other and making connections between groups.
St. Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians asked us to “encourage one another and build each other up,” this is the purpose of many of these groups because they encourage us as a parish community and they build us up by serving us. Let us encourage and build them up by adding to their number. Each of the groups in our parish welcomes new members at any time. If you feel called to serve in any of these groups, details of who to contact can be found by following this link.
Thank you to all those who attended and contributed to the success of the day.
